Gainesville native and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Tom Petty was posthumously honored with a doctorate degree Thursday morning as part of the University of Florida's 2023 commencement ceremonies.

"Petty, who died Oct. 2, 2017 at the age of 66, was awarded an honorary "Doctor of Music" degree after receiving unanimous approval from the UF Faculty Senate and the board of trustees.   UF Provost Joe Glover told the crowd that other than an earned doctorate, the honorary degree is the greatest recognition the university can give an individual.   After a short video on Petty, UF President Ben Sasse conferred the degree."

Rob Laakso, Kurt Vile & the Violators and Swirlies Guitarist, Dies at 44

"Rob Laakso, a longtime guitarist and multi-instrumentalist in Kurt Vile & The Violators and Swirlies, died this past Thursday (May 4), his wife Mamie-Claire Cornelius confirmed in an Instagram post. Laakso was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of bile duct cancer. “You are the light of my life and the only slightest sliver of peace I have is that you are no longer in pain. We’ll be dreaming of you every night until we see you again,” wrote Cornelius. He was 44. 

“After praying for a miracle every day since he was diagnosed my prayers recently changed to a peaceful home departure surrounded by love. I realize now every day we had together was a miracle,” Cornelius wrote in an update on GoFundMe to cover costs of Laakso’s cancer treatment. “I’m also trying to remember for myself and as an example to carry out to our children how much Rob loved life, he was always busy with a new project to better himself, writing a new song, ready for an adventure, eager to try a new restaurant, go for a hike, take a sauna - so please go live life and try something new for him when you feel an ache creeping in. Go make the most of it; he pushed through so much just to sit and bask in the joy of our children running through bubbles in the backyard… that was absolute living to him in our most recent days. It doesn’t have to be grand, just enjoy the present deeply.”

Trupa Eagles anunță turneul final: A sosit timpul să închidem cercul

Grupul american  Eagles, cunoscut în întreaga lume datorită cântecului său Hotel California, a anunţat joi că va susţine un turneu de adio.  Turneul va începe la New York în luna septembrie şi care ar putea fi totuşi prelungit, înainte să pună capăt carierei sale de peste o jumătate de secol.     Turneul, intitulat „The Long Goodbye”, va începe pe 7 septembrie, mai exact, Turneul „The Long Goodbye” este programat să înceapă pe 7 septembrie 2023, la Madison Square Garden din New York City , înainte de a se îndrepta către Boston, Denver, Atlanta și alte câteva orașe.Trupa Eagles este formată din Don Henley, 75 de ani, Joe Walsh, 75 de ani, Timothy B. Schmit, 75 de ani și Vince Gill, 65 de ani.

*Cam multi ne parasesc in ultima vreme, parca nu sintem pregatiti pentru asta, noi, categoria in care ma includ si eu, care am crescut cu primele melodii al acestori mari muzicieni din secolul trecut.  Desi nu intelegeam engleza deloc, dar ne-am considerat cunostinte bune cei care le admiram talentele.  In acele zile sa auzi o muzica noua, era cu totul o alta experienta.  In rare momente le auzeam la Radio Europa Libera sau Vocea Americii, statii strict interzise de ascultat.  Pe urma Ungaria le transmitea la greu iar Transilvania urla de muzica noua mai ales in zonele unde intra la TV si programul transmis din Budapesta!!!   Asta le-a influentat grupurile din Romania sa apara in Timisoara si Arad, dar cu ce muzica ... prelucrare din folclorul romanesc, nu prea suna a rock!!!
