Druidic zodiac

Being the third element of the astrological equation, the Druidic horoscope descends from Celtic tradition, its invention being attributed to the Druids, the Celtic priests. It is known mostly under the name of Tree Zodiac and consists of elements focusing on the interior structure of a person’s character. Its origin is lost in the dawn of time, since the Druids have obtained it from the wisdom of the Atlanteans, whose continuators they were.

Druid means a priest, but also a wise man, a magician and a physician. Druids were considered mediators between humans and the supernatural, teaching a doctrine of immortality of the soul and of transmigration of the spirit from one body to another, considering death a mere phenomenon of crossing a threshold between two dimensions of existence. Julius Caesar, in De Bello Gallico, referred to them as wisemen who would only pass on their teachings in live speech, in order to train their disciple’s memory as well as their imagination. He also wrote “they were teaching youngsters many things of stars and their movement, the dimensions of the universe, the origins of things, as well as the powers and attributes of the immortal gods”. Apart from this, Druids studied natural sciences, mathematics, medicine, astronomy, astrology, ethics, law, historical and mythical traditions, epic literature, cosmological philosophy and theology.

The Druidic Horoscope consists of 21 elements or trees, in close connection to the solar degrees, each covering a decan. There are some elements which are an exception, but most trees last for ten days, or, more correctly put, cover ten solar degrees and repeat after approximately six months. For instance, we can study the table of correspondence of the Tree Zodiac and the solar degrees. The duration of the trees is in close connection with the Sun’s movement and the sign is determined by the solar degree in the moment of birth. During equinoxes and solstices we find four special trees that only last one day, or rather, one solar degree. Other special trees are the Poplar, which appears three times and the Walnut tree, covering a double decade in the month of the Scorpio.

March 21: The Sun enters the constellation Aries, marking the beginning of the astronomical and astrological year. He crosses the Heaven Equator passing from the Southern into the Northern hemisphere. Day and night are equal in length and it is the beginning of Spring.

June 22: The Sun is in the constellation of the Cancer at 0 degrees. This coincides with the Summer solstice, meaning the longest day and shortest night of the year. This is the beginning of Summer.

September 22: The Sun enters the constellation of the Libra. This marks the Autumn equinox, night and day are equal again and this is the beginning of Autumn.

December 22: The Sun enters the constellation of the Capricorn. The shortest day and longest night of the year mark the beginning of Winter.

In each of these four days we encounter special trees, which only cover a 24 hour span. These are the Oak, the Birch, the Olive tree and the Beech.

All trees determine the interior of the people, since this type of Zodiac deals rather with the soul and the sentimental and emotional side of beings.

Studying the Tree Zodiac requires an understanding of astronomy elements, since signs are determined based on the apparent way of the Sun, which was of old one of the ways to calculate the calendar. There is a strong connection between these trees and the decans we find, for instance, in the Egyptian astrological system. While analyzing, it is good to remember that, while one may encounter the same trees in periods six months apart, their main characteristics are the same; yet, at the same time, we must consider the star sign the trees cover. For instance, the Summer Elm, at the end of the sign of Cancer will be more flexible and intuitive, while the Winter Elm, at the end of the Capricorn will be tougher and more unbending. Thus we must detail every tree, depending on the star sign it is encountered in.
