The Rum Diary is based on the homonymous novel written by Hunter S. Thompson and stars Johnny Depp. Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) is a journalist who moves to Puerto Rico to write as a freelancer for a local paper during the 1950s.

Kemp grows tired of New York and the Eisenhower administration and moves to Puerto Rico to write for The San Juan Star. He starts to drink rum and develops a fixation on a woman named Chenault (Amber Heard).
