Details

The English Patient is a romantic drama film directed by Anthony Minghella. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Michael Ondaatje. The action is set during World War II and portrays a beautiful love story, using the flashbacks technique.

A critically burned man known only as the English patient is looked after Hana (Juliette Binoche), a canadian nurse, in an abandoned church in Italy. Through a series of flashbacks, the patient reveals that he is a Hungarian geographer named Laszlo de Almasy (Ralph Fiennes) who was drawing maps in the Sahara Desert for the Royal Geographical Society. He meets Katharine Clifton (Kristin Scott Thomas), the wife of Geoffrey Clifton (Colin Firth), who joins the exploration in the desert. Almasy falls in love with Katharine and they start an affair.

Meanwhile, in the present day, Hana receives the visit of David Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe) at the abandoned monastery. Caravaggio lost a thumb during the war and he reveals to the patient the reason why he went through this ordeal.

In addition to Almasy and Katharine's love story, the film brings to light the romance between Hana and Kip, an Indian Sapper in the British Army. A series of tragical events in her past make her believe that anyone who gets close to her will die, therefore Kip's job as a bomb defuser brings a lot of tension into their relationship.
