The Descendants is American comedy-drama  based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. Its action revolves around Matt King (George Clooney), a lawyer from Hawaii who tries to reconnect with his daughters after his wife suffers a boat accident which sens her into a deep coma.

Meanwhile, Matt has to deal with 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17-year-old Alex (Shailene Woodley) who call him the "back-up parent". Matt learns that his wife will never recover from the coma, so he is forced to disconnect her from the life support machines.

When Matt informs his older daughter Alex that her mother will die, she tell him that Elizabeth was having an affair at the time of the accident. Matt takes his daughters on a trip to Kauai to confront Elizabeth's lover, a real estate broker named Brian Speer (Matthew Lillard).
