Details
Requiem for a Dream is a cult film directed by Darren Arronofsky and starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans and Jennifer Connelly. The drama is based on the Hubert Selby Jr.'s homonymous novel. The action revolves around different forms of addiction that lead to the distruction of the characters' lives. The film depicts three seasons from the main characters' lives: Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), her son Harry (Jared Leto), his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) and Harry's friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans).
Sara, an elderly widow from Brooklyn spends her time watching infomercials. When she receives a phone call announcing her that she might be invited to the television show, she becomes obsessed with the idea of getting slim, in order to fit in her old red dress. She starts taking weight-loss amphetamine pills and sedatives and, despite her son's warnings, she continues the treatment, ignoring the fact that the pills were leading her to addiction and amphetamine psychosis.
Harry, Marion and Tyrone are heroin addicts. They enter in an illegal business with drugs hoping to gain enough money to allow Marion to open a fashion store and to help Tyrone escape the streets. Unfortunately, Tyrone is arrested and Harry must use most of their money to pay the bail. Moreover, the increasing arrests make it hard for them to get the drugs they need, making them feel more and more desperate. This is where the actual drama begins.
