Alfred Hitchcock's film is based on the 1942 short story named It Had to Be Murder, written by Cornell Woolrich.

L. B. "Jeff" Jeffries (James Stewart), a professional photographer is confined in his appartment after breaking his leg. He spends his time in the wheelchair recuperating and looking out  of the rear window, watching his neighbors. He sees a dancer, a lonely woman he calls Miss Lonelyheart, a songwriter, a few married couples and a salesman and his wife.

When he sees Thorwald, the salesman, coming home several nights with a large case and noticing Thorwald's wife missing for some time, he starts to suspect that the salesman killed his wife. Seeing him cleaning a large knife and handsaw definitely makes him very suspicious. He tells his observations to his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), his nurse (Thelma Ritter) and his friend Tom Doyle (Raymond Burr), a local police detective.
