Details
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is an Italian drama film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. The film brings to light the young Salvatore, also known as Toto, his coming of age and his reflections as an adult about the past, but also Tornatore's celebration of films in general.
The action is set in Rome during the 1980s, when Salvatore Di Vita, a famous Italian director comes home and his girlfriend tells him that his mother called to let him know that Alfredo has died. That is the moment that triggers Salvatore's flashbacks. The rest of the film flows as a series of flashbacks which take place after World War II, in the 1940s in Italy.
Salvatore is an intelligent child who discovers his love for films. He spends most of his time at the local movie house, Cinema Paradiso and develops a close relationship with Alfredo, the projectionist. The flashbacks give us the oportunity to observe the developement of the friendship between Alfredo and Toto but also allow us to see young Toto's transition from childhood to adulthood.
