Luc Besson's thriller film stars Jean Reno, Gary Oldman and Natalie Portman. Leon Montana (Jean Reno) is a professional assassin who lives in New York. He works for Tony (Danny Aiello), a mafioso who operates from the Supreme Macaroni Company restaurant. In his spare time, he takes care of his best friend, a houseplant, and watches Gene Kelly musicals.

He meets Mathilda (Natalie Portman), a 12-year-old girl whose parents are killed by a corrupt DEA agent who found out that her father was stealing some of the drugs he was storing in his appartment. Mathilda realizes that Leon is a professional killer and seeks for his help, wanting to revenge the death of her family. Leon teaches her how to use firearms and, in return, she offers her services as a maid and teacher, as Leon is illiterate.
