Frank Capra's comedy drama film is based on the short story "The Greatest Gift" by Philip Van Doren Stern. The film tells the story of George Bailey (James Stewart), a man who runs a company founded by his father.

On Christmas Eve, George's uncle, Billy, loses the business' 8000 $. Potter, George's enemy, finds the money and hides it from Billy. George is affraid that he will be held responsible and sent to jail, so he starts to contemplate suicide.

His imminent suicide draws the attention of Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers), a gentle guardian angel who comes to earth to help George. He starts to show him all of his contributions to the community and the lives he has influenced over the years.
