August 6, 2006.
Mr. Dimitrius Hıristofyas,
Secretary General of the AKEL
Nicosia-Cyprus
Mr. Secretary General,
The war which is taking place in the Middle East has immediatley put Cyprus in the forefront of the events. The US soldiers have begun to land in the British naval base of Dikelia and the air base of Agratur in Southern Cyprus. Southern Cyprus has become the most important base of the USA in its military operations in the Middle East. In the meantime, the daily newspapers, dated August 3, 2006, reported that the French soldiers would be stationed in Southern Cyprus.
We are now confronted with a question which everybody taking an interest in the US aggression in the Middle East is obliged to answer immediately: Why are the US soldiers stationed in Southern Cyprus and not in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)? Why are the USA and the European Union implementing a plan to to annihilate the TRNC? The answers to these questions very clearly indicate which Cyprus constitutes a platform enabling the US aggression against the Middle East and which Cyprus constitutes an obstacle against imperialism.
Mr. Secretary General,
The US Secretary of State, Ms. Condoleezza Rice, made a statement on July, 25, 2006 in Jerusalem, announcing that the time had come to bring into life the ‘Great Middle East Project’. In the meantime, the “US Armed Fources Journal” published a map aiming at the realization of the ‘Great Middle East Project’. With the publication of this map, the USA announced to the whole world that it intended to partition Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and planned to allocate some parts of Azerbeijan to Armenia and some parts of Turkmenistan to the Karzai regime. I am sending you, herewith, the map published by the “US Armed Forces Journal” and also the map showing the present political borders of the Middle East.
The USA and Israel, with the war that they have started in the Middle East and their new project that they have initiated, have shown to the world who their enemies are. Turkey is amongst the states which the USA intends to partition within the context of the ‘Great Middle East Project’ or with its new name, the ‘Enlarged Middle East and Northern Africa Project’. On the other hand, Southern Cyprus, together with the puppet state established by the US occupation forces in North Iraq, have been put on the list as the pawns of the US-Israeli aggression. However, this is primarily a US project. To destroy this plan should, no doubt, be the mission of all the people and the organizations which stand against imperialism.
Mr. Secretary General,
The USA has determined the ‘division of blocs’ in our region and in the world with its policies carried out in the aftermath of the First Gulf War and following its occupation of Iraq. ‘The Enlarged Middle East and Northern Africa Project’ and the maps published indicate this ‘division’. We can clearly see the places in Southern Cyprus from where the airplanes would start off to bomb their targets in the Middle East and from which ports the armoured war ships would sail.
We, as the Labour Party of Turkey as well as the Turkish people, would like to make our position very clear: The US plans concerning the stationing of the US troops in Turkey and the mission given to the Turkish Armed Forces in the occupation of Iraq had not been put into practice as a result of the campaigns carried out by our Party. The Co-President of the ‘Great Middle East Project’, Mr. Tayyip Erdoğan, has openly stated in his speech to the Parliamentary Group of his Party that to say “no” to the US army was tantamount to saying “yes” to the Labour Party.
We give our solemn pledge to the world: Turkey shall not be made an instrument of the US aggression. The USA shall not be permitted to use the Turkish bases such as İncirlik for its military operations in the Middle East. The Turkish Army shall not contribute in any way to the military armed forces of the impealist powers under the label of a “peacekeeping force”. Furthermore, Turkey shall definitely destroy the partition plans of the USA and shall firmly stand against worldwide imperialism, as it had done in the aftermath of the First World War. For this reason, the present Government of the Turkish Republic should be toppled down and a National Democratic Government which would firmly resist against imperialism should be established. Our Labour Party is ready to assume the leadership role in such a process.
Mr. Secretary General,
Undoubtedly, the Middle Eastern States fighting against the USA and also the international community have some expectations from the political parties of Southern Cyprus and of Greece.
The British-US bases in Southern Cyprus, including Dikelia and Agratur, should be taken over and the US and European imperialists should be forced to withdraw all their soldiers from Cyprus. If Southern Cyprus is a sovereign and independent state, as is said to be, then it should not permit any military operations aimed at Lebanon, Palestine or any region of the Middle East from the territory under her sovereignty.
We, as the Labour Party, shall wholeheartedly support any struggle for the evacuation of the US-British bases and the withdrawal of their soldiers from Cyprus. This means for us the defence of the motherland and at the same time, is considered as an international mission.
At present, we are witnessing, especially in the USA and Europe, some so-called anti-war movements which do not target at the imperialism of the USA but make calls for peace to the perpetuators of war crimes as well as to their victims. Such movements which set apart the struggle against war from the struggle against imperialism had also been witnessed in the First and the Second World Wars. Lenin’s position and struggle against this unreal anti-war movement can, no doubt, be seen as an example also for today.
Mr. Secretary General,
Whatever your previous attitude has been, there is today a reality which nobody can deny: The TRNC has become the forefront of humanity against the US imperialism. The so-called plan of the USA “to integrate Cyprus” is, in reality, linked to its plan of partitioning Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Azerbeijan and Turkmenistan. Furthermore, the USA, behind the label of the “integration of Cyprus”, intends in reality to convert Cyprus into an ‘unsinkable aircraft carrier’ which it could use against its targets in Russia, China and Middle Asia. Since the USA sees the TRNC as an obstacle in the realization of this plan, it wishes to put an end to its existence. If the TRNC should no more exist, then the territory of the TRNC would also become a US base like Southern Cyprus. No country and political party which stands up against imperialism should and could submit to a plan which threatens the destiny of the whole humanity. If Northern Cyprus should become a base of aggression of the West against the Middle East and the whole international community, it would, primarily, be the Labour Party of Turkey which would firmly oppose such a scheme.
In this case, all the states which aspire for peace in the world, including the regional states, have to strengthen the position of the TRNC. The TRNC, like Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, Iran and Turkey, has become the front of struggle against the US imperialism.
A line extending from Cyprus to Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq has come into being. Turkey has become a front-line state of the line extending from Northern Cyprus to Northern Iraq.
In this front, on the one side, there are the USA, England, Israel and the US pawns in North Iraq. On the side of humanity are the countries and peoples whose lands are occupied and face the risk of partition.
In order to support the struggle of Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq against the US imperialism, one should, at the same time, defend the existence of the TRNC and contribute to the territorial integrity of Iraq by eliminating the Puppet State established by the USA in North Iraq.
Mr. Secretary General,
It is quite obvious that the real power which would destroy the ‘Enlarged Middle East and North African Project’ is Turkey, Iran and Syria. Turkey, as has often been said, is the key country in this region. Turkey’s defense of her motherland shall bury the map drawn up by the USA, shall bring into focus the disintegration of the NATO and shall fasten the process of Europe’s independence of the USA.
As can be seen, Turkey is struggling not only on behalf of herself but in the name of the whole humanity, as it had done in the First Wold War and its aftermath. Lenin who had stated that the First World War was an imperialistic war, had also determined that Turkey, in this War, had fought to defend her country against imperialism. Turkey, with her resistance against the imperialist powers in Gallipoli, had laid the ground for the realization of the Soviet Revolution and with her “War of Independence” between the years of 1918-22 had destroyed the plan of the imperialist powers to destruct the Soviet Revolution. As the Turkish nation and the Labour Party, the mission that we shall fulfill for the sake of humanity in the near future will definitely be greater than what we had achieved in history.
The Greek Government and its army which had been a toy of imperialism between the years of 1918-22 is a good example from which one should deduct useful lessons. Greece and Southern Cyprus had then become the instruments of imperialism and this had finally caused the “Asia Minor disaster”. Censequently, our peoples had both equally suffered and the friendship between our countries had also been negatively affected.
Mr. Secretary General,
As you well know, Turkey is situated on the lands which once had been the lands of the great empires. Turkey, together with the Soviet regime, had initiated the era of the revolutions. The Turkish Republic had been established as a result of a revolution against imperialism which had worldwide effects. Turkey has been fighting against capitalist expansion and imperialism for a period of two centuries. When we look at the map of the world, we can see that only a handful of states have had this experience against imperialism. No matter how our Atlantic ties in the recent 60 years have a played a negative role, Turkey’s historical mission has today come into life again.
There exists no power in the world which could partition Turkey. The USA is being defeated in Iraq and Lebanon. It will, no doubt, be also defeated in Cyprus and the Aegean which constitute parts of the war-front. States which are cooperating with the USA will share the same destiny as the USA.
We, as the Labour Party, accept today with the neighbouring peoples and parties, all the difficulties of the struggle against imperialism but are sure that tomorrow we shall together enjoy great victories. Our hope is that the peoples of Southern Cyprus and Greece, as well as their political parties, have a share in the victories of the Middle Eastern countries and not in the destruction of the USA.
For this reason,
- we would like you to give up supporting the “PKK” which declares openly to be a pawn of the USA and Israel, is trained by the Special Forces of the USA, takes money from the USA and has been driven to the midst of the fire in the US plans of partitioning Turkey. We kindly ask you to put an end to the privileges recognized to the PKK which is the US pawn in Southern Cyprus; we also kindly ask you to refrain from giving any aid to these poor people in furnishing their services to the USA.
- We kindly ask you to refrain from using groups such as the “ÖDP”, “EMEP”, and “TKP” against Turkey which constitute the US front in Cyprus and North Iraq and contribute to the realization of the ‘Enlarged Middle East and North African Project’ and also refrain from making them sign commnuiques which would avail them to the services of the US imperialism. You should by now have realized as a result of their relations with your parties and organizations that these organizations could not be the leading parties of a great nation such as the Turkish nation. The Labour Parties of all countries disregard flattery. We kindly ask you not to be the cause of the treachery of the said groups against Turkey which, in the near future, is expected to be the centre of the struggle against the US imperialism.
- Give up your support of every movement and instrument which is anti-Turkish!
Such policies will, undoubtedly, tear you apart from the Greek and the Greek Cypriot peoples. Such practices will be dragging you to becoming a simple toy of the US plans.
Mr. Secretary General,
It is not sufficient for a political party to be just labelled as “communist” in its struggle against imperialism. As you well know, in the Baghdad Government, established by the US occupation forces, one seat is allocated to the so-called “communist” party. The pitiful ends of the people who had been at the service of the imperialist bandits or who had sat comfortably in the seats offered to them by the occupation forces were lastly been witnessed in the Second World War. One should also remember that the party which had dragged the Soviet Union after 1960 to capitalism and which had destroyed socialism in its first motherland was named as the “communist” party of Kruschev-Brejnev-Gorbachev. In the past, in multilateral as well as in bilateral talks, we endeavoured to explain to brother parties these experiences together with their theoretical analysis. Now we are once again fulfilling our mission.
We wrote this letter as part of our responsibility vis-à-vis the peoples of Greece and Southern Cyprus and the revolutionaries. We would like you to take our letter in due consideration and if you find it appropriate, to submit it to your board members and all the other members of your Party.
With our feelings of solidarity against imperialism we send our sincerest regards and greetings to all the friends of the Middle Eastern countries in Greece and Southern Cyprus from Turkey which has been struggling against imperialism for two centuries.

Mr. Secretary General,
The USA induced the ‘repositioning of international forces’ in our region as well as in the whole world through the policies it followed in the aftermath of the First Gulf War and after its occupation of Iraq. “The Enlarged Middle East and Northern Africa Project” and the maps made public are nothing but straight indications of this repositioning. The so-called US plan “to integrate Cyprus” is, in reality, closely linked to its plan of partitioning Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Azerbeijan and Turkmenistan. Furthermore, behind the veil of the “integration of Cyprus”, the USA intends in reality to convert Cyprus into an ‘unsinkable aircraft carrier’, which could also be used against its targets in Russia, China and Central Asia. The Greek Government and its army, which acted as a toy of imperialism between the years 1918-22, exemplify an event from which one should draw useful lessons for today. Becoming an instrument in imperialist hands ultimately led to a sad end, which has been referred to as the “Asia Minor disaster” in Greece and Southern Cyprus since then. Consequently, it has become a common experience for both our peoples that should not be forgotten: We should think of the great pains suffered by the peoples of both countries and remember how distructive it proved for the friendship between the two countries.

A frontier extending from Cyprus to Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq has now come into being. Turkey has become a front-line state of this frontier extending from Northern Cyprus to Northern Iraq.
On the one side of this frontier are the USA, England, Israel and the US pawns in Northern Iraq. On the side of humanity are the countries and peoples whose lands are occupied and face the risk of partition.
In this confrontation, to support the struggle of Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq against the US imperialism, one should, at the same time, defend the existence of the TRNC and contribute to the territorial integrity of Iraq by eliminating the Puppet State established by the USA in Northern Iraq.
Mr. Secretary General,
It is quite obvious that the real power which is to destroy the “Enlarged Middle East and Northern Africa Project” consists of Turkey, Iran and Syria. Turkey, as has often been said, is the key country in this region. Turkey’s defence of her motherland shall bury the USA in the map drawn up by the USA itself. It shall also bring the disintegration of the NATO onto the agenda and shall fasten the process of Europe’s independence of the USA.
As can be seen, Turkey is struggling not only on behalf of herself but also in the name of the whole humanity, as it did in the First Wold War and its aftermath. Lenin, who stated that the First World War was an imperialistic war, also noted that Turkey’s position in this war was one of self-defence against imperialism. In fact, Turkey, with her resistance against the imperialist powers in Gallipoli, laid the ground for the realization of the Soviet Revolution and with her “War of Independence” between the years 1918-22, disconcerted the plan of the imperialist powers to encompass and then to stifle the Soviet Revolution. As the Turkish nation and the Workers’ Party, the mission that we shall fulfil for the sake of humanity in the near future will definitely be greater than what we achieved in history.
Mr. Secretary General,
As you well know, Turkey stands on the cultural heritage of great empires. The Turkish Revolution, together with the Soviet Revolution, initiated the era of revolutions. The Turkish Republic was established as a result of the revolution against imperialism which had worldwide effects. Turkey has been fighting against capitalist expansion and imperialism for a period of two centuries now. When we look at the map of the world, we can see that only a handful of states have had this experience against imperialism. No matter how our Atlantic ties in the last 60 years have played a negative role, Turkey’s historical mission has today come into life again.
There exists no power in the world which could partition Turkey. The USA is being defeated in Iraq and Lebanon. It will, no doubt, be also defeated in Cyprus and the Aegean region which constitute parts of the same war-front. Those who are cooperating with the USA will share the same destiny as the USA.
We, as the Workers’ Party, together with the neighbouring peoples and parties, now accept all the difficulties of the struggle against imperialism, but are also sure that tomorrow we shall enjoy great victories together. Our hope is that the peoples of Southern Cyprus and Greece, as well as their political parties, will have a share in the victories of the Middle Eastern countries and not in the disaster of the USA.
For this reason,
- we ask you to give up supporting the PKK which declares openly to be a pawn of the USA and Israel, which is trained by the Special Forces of the USA, which receives money from the USA and has been driven into the midst of fire in the US plans of partitioning Turkey. We ask you to put an end to the privileges recognized to the PKK in Southern Cyprus; we also ask you to refrain from giving any aid to these pawns to serve the USA.
- We kindly ask you to refrain from using against Turkey the groups such as the Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP), Labour Party (EMEP), and so-called Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), which support the US front in Cyprus and Northern Iraq and thus contribute to the realization of the “Enlarged Middle East and Northern Africa Project”. We also ask you to refrain from making them sign communiquès which would avail them to the services of the US imperialism. You should by now have realized as a result of their relations with your parties and organizations that these organizations could not be the leading parties of a great nation such as the Turkish nation. Workers’ Parties of all countries disregard flattery. We ask you not to be the cause of the treachery of the said groups against Turkey which, in the near future, is expected to be the centre of the struggle against the US imperialism.
- We ask you to give up your support of every movement and instrument which is anti-Turkish!
Such policies will, undoubtedly, tear you apart from the Greek and the Greek Cypriot peoples. Such practices will turn you into a simple toy of the US plans.
Mr. Secretary General,
It is not sufficient for a political party to call itself “communist”, in order to stand against imperialism. As you well know, in the Baghdad Government, established by the US occupation forces, one seat is allocated to the so-called “communist” party. The pitiful ends of the people who were at the service of the imperialist bandits or who sat comfortably in the seats offered to them by the occupation forces were last witnessed in the Second World War. One should also remember that the party of Kruschev, Brezhnev and Gorbachev, which dragged the Soviet Union after 1960 to capitalism and which destroyed socialism in its first motherland was named the “communist” party. In the past, in multilateral as well as in bilateral talks, we endeavoured to explain to brother parties these experiences together with their theoretical analyses. Now we are once again fulfilling our mission.
We are writing this letter on behalf of our responsibility vis-à-vis the peoples of Greece and Southern Cyprus and the revolutionaries . We would like you to take our letter in due consideration and if you find it appropriate, to submit it to your board members and all the other members of your Party.
With our feelings of solidarity against imperialism, we send our sincerest regards and greetings to all the friends of the Middle Eastern countries in Greece and Southern Cyprus from Turkey which has been struggling against imperialism for two centuries.
